A Little Story…

Once a little girl, captivated by her grandmother’s sewing machine, learned the hard way to keep tiny fingers away from moving needles—a lesson that ironically may have sparked her lifelong passion for quilting. This story began over 100 years ago with, Ollie Sara, the grandmother of my much adored, needle-pricking grandmother…

Who Was Ollie Sara?

It’s no surprise that I never met my great, great grandmother. But as my grandmother taught me how to sew, she would share memories of how her grandmother, Ollie Sara, taught her. As the years passed, I learned more about Ollie in our sewing chats and the bond they shared.

Creating Ollie Sara Designs

Ollie Sara Designs is a tribute to sharing the tradition of quilting, but also to the connections and bonds it creates in families, friends and community. In Ollie’s generation, quilting was performed out of necessity to conserve. It’s inspiring to think about how how early quilters used their creative resourcefulness to transform old remnants and scraps into cherished works of functional art.  Ollie Sara Designs encourages this ethos — to inspire fellow creatives to see the untapped potential of our fabric stashes to create fresh, reimagined BONUS creations!

Who is Angela?

Well that little girl who loved to create decided science and math were better at paying the bills so she became an engineer.  Learning lots of math, how to solve problems, and the importance of simplifying the complex along the way, turns out to be nice skills to have as a quilter. But the best job in the world was being a mom, so when the opportunity to move to another country afforded the option to be a full-time mom, there was no hesitation.  Living overseas and traveling the world, further engrained the value of wasting less.

So here I am, channeling the creative spirit through the lens of an engineer.  Most of my designs, if not all, will start with small basic pieces.  Whether you are new to quilting, are experienced or just need some inspiration for your ever-growing fabric stash, welcome.

Let’s flip the old adage of “Waste not, want not” to “Waste not, Quilt alot!”
